Collecting some info for my next project which is going to be a fantasy course based in my local area.

I'm from a small country village (if you could even call it that) in East Co.Clare, Ireland. It's so small that we only have a pub, a church and a primary school (ages 5-12). Also my next door neighbours are cows 🐂🐂

My plan at first is going to be to try and recreate the natural landscape of the area and from there aim to build a resort worthy golf course. My thoughts, due to the area, are to recreate a countryside type links course. There minimal trees with a lot of hill so it'll make for an interesting design.

Here are some of the images I've gathered so far from Kilmurry

Had an idea for a par 4 so decided to put in a little work on it and this is what I came up with. It's potentially going to be midway through my front 9 based on my current idea of how I want the course to flow.

This is a dogleg left par 4 that's going to play somewhere between 470 & 480 yards. The tee shot is going to play over two pot bunkers that guard both sides of the fairway.
From there you're approach is a tough one, out of bounds surrounds the green so you have to be precise especially with a deep green side bunker short left.

The inspiration for this hole is the field out the back of my house, sticking as closely as possible to the hometown criteria. So if you hit your ball into my garden right of the green, you're not getting it back

I'd have shared pictures but apparently I'm not allowed?? Hmm

Been working on the front 9 over the last few weeks, here's a little look from the back of the 4th green & a few images of the par 3 5th.

No planting done on the course itself, just mapping and sculpting for the moment.

Working on a short par 4, drivable with a favourable wind but beware the pot bunker on the left hand side of the fairway

Holes in order from 1 to 8 - here's what the test run looks like. 1st hole was a great idea but not suiting the flow of the course, doesn't make sense right now.

I like how this is looking, but the water seems a bit out of place. Maybe some deep grass bunkers instead?

Ya I hear you, I'm leaving it in place for the moment. I don't want to stray too far from the small pot bunkers I'm using. Maybe the pond on the 3rd could transfer into a grouping of pot bunkers. As for the first hole, my idea for the course drastically changed after that hole.

Your terrain work is awesome, the lighting and the look you've got already is great. I would like to see rough or heavy rough around your fairway pot bunkers personally, not sure if that is a normal look in Ireland or not, but the actual designs seem well thought out in addition to being well executed, excited to play it when it comes out!

I've definitely considered the rough around the bunkers, the reason I've gone away from them at the moment is that the ball was getting stuck in the rough while rolling back in and ended up creating a horrific looking lie. In realistic terms I get that having **** lies is pretty much what you sign up for with golf, but the ball was pretty much going sideways

Now it's not 100%, I'm not in love with having no rough there and may come back to it and try to create some beardies when coming back to polish it. Thanks for the comments

The swing holes 9 & 10. One a dangerous reachable par 5 with trouble lurking more on the second shot than the first. Inspiration for the second shot came from the 16th at Royal Portrush, aptly named Calamity Corner. The long par 3 measuring 236 yards is to an elevated green with a huge drop off short of the green leaving for a difficult up and down should you wind up down there.

Following that is the short par 4 10th, with a favourable wind it is very reachable should you carry the hump. Lay up on the tee shot, it gifts you an easy approach, birdie here is a must.

Early look at holes 11 & 12 where this links takes a turn in through a forest area before heading back for the clubhouse.

Working on the par 5 15th at the moment. Blind tee shot to a dog leg left fairway sitting at the bottom of the hill. Named "The Pump House" as a tribute to the local pub that sit behinds the green ran by the local government representative and my cousin.

Pressing onto another dogleg par 4, the 16th offers a tight but altogether pretty straight forward tee shot, the longer hitters should find there ball will make it some way down the hill leaving an awkward stance for that approach shot. Take too much off the tee shot and you could leave yourself with a long blind second shot to a green that will challenge the best of players.

So kinda suffering designer block on the final two holes at the moment, I have some ideas but not entirely sure how I want to execute them. So while not being able to decide what to do for those 2 holes l, I went and began reworking my bunkers.

Before I literally just went with fairway and bunker which from a playability point of view worked beautifully but looked so weird. Going back to a very classic looking bearded bunker that is surrounded by heavy rough and long grass.

Here's a shot of a bunker I finished on the 1st hole, let me know what you think
