Is it me or can you only play multiplayer locally with one controller? I have two and passing back mad forth gets annoying.

No..you can use two.  Just turn on the second controller and "Add Player" with the second (or third or fourth) controller.  Whichever controller adds the player, controls that player.  That way people can play with just one, or multiple controllers.
