While I agree both games have their pros and cons  ... the problem is PG has reached checkmate.

PG 2 failed to materialise ...... and TGC progressed. Despite the faults .. it's still a good golf game imo.

Yes, no PG2 and the devs have decided not to explain why, after asking for ideas and suggestions for the next iteration. The Jones boys sold PG (PP) and have said virtually nothing since. Having said that, the input from the devs on this forum isn’t great.
On the whole, devs take constructive ideas of ways to improve a game as criticism.
I’ve always believed that the perfect golf video game would have no canned shot options, relying totally on the user’s shot set up. So there would be only one swing adapted for all shots.
PGA Tour is just a confusing mess of different swing speeds, which is why I don’t use the pitch and splash canned swing types.

PG matters aside - what Tracman did with their course software for the Sims is amazing.

Wow... I just checked in on this thread for the first time in months and saw that it's now creeping up on 2 million page views!?  It's really too bad that Perfect Golf 2 never game out.  From what I've seen of the software that would have been PG2 (basically Trackman Golf Simulator with the golfer animation and controller/mouse swing control inputs added in), it would have been spectacular.  The graphics for Trackman Simulator courses are outstanding!

Here's an example of what the Perfect Golf 2 software can deliver in terms of course graphics, as it's being currently used in the Trackman Simulator:

let's Hope 2k/HB are aiming for that with a new game engine in the coming months. Just a shame They sold out to trackman to make courses than design PG2 Game. Also would have been nice to see Perfect Golf on Console another letdown.

I don't think we could get quite the level of detail in PGA TOUR 2K23, as there is in PG2 because of 2K21's (and likely 2K23's) courses having to use HB Studios' course DNA structure.  All of the courses building blocks remain on the server and get doled out as needed online to the gamer's computer on demand.  That necessitates a more generic look, overall, but especially reveals its weakness when it comes to pot bunkers.  An authentic looking pot bunker has to be stick built, for lack of a better term.  PGA TOUR 2K21 doesn't have the modeling tool or resources to do this.  Perfect Golf's courses are all stored on the host computer's hard drive, so the details for the specifics of the pot bunkers can be included there.

It's a tough call as to which approach would be best overall.  I just know that I would miss being able to play all the courses I play now on 2K21, if I was required to download them in 150 to 400 MB files each.

I just hope that HB Studios can come up with something that looks more next-gen on the Series X/S and PS5 with the next engine.  I don't think we're every going to see realistic looking pot bunkers with this engine.

If HB Studios could make a cylinder hole for the ball to drop in, then why couldn't they make a pot bunker. I think they just didn't want to spend the time on it as time is money and these guys were all about budgeting their time and money.

I see your point bob and on a small scale, it makes sense.  The way I understand it, a full size pot bunker, with its unique intricacies would require course detail depth that would exceed what could be stored and fetched from a central server using HB Studios' course DNA construction model.  To get it to work efficiently, they'd have to store the pot bunker data on the users hard drive, and that would eat up hard drive space quickly on courses that use pot bunkers.

Oh WOW.... I justed checked in today as I was planning to add another post about something I noticed related to this thread, when I just noticed ---- this thread now has over TWO MILLION page views!?  That is truly phenomenal for  a game that hasn't been updated in two years.  What would have likely been a very impressive Perfect Golf 2 was swallowed up by Trackman, when they bought the rights for Perfect Golf in 2019.  Perfect Golf 2 looks fantastic on the Trackman launch simulator, but it'll never be converted to a desktop computer version with mouse or gamepad control :'(

LOL... it was fun while it lasted. If PG 2 had ever become a reality, with customizable golfers, and bringing the graphics up to the level of what PP provided for Trackman, I probably wouldn't be worrying too much about what's happening with PGA TOUR 2K23, or EA Sports Golf.
