I know how to setup stroke play, but I can't figure out how to set up a game of match play head to head online.  Is this possible on the PS4?

Yes, on the game/player select screen, use the right (R1) shoulder button to select "Online Matchplay" in the first field.  After you hit the advance or go button (can't remember what it's called, I'm at work right now), you'll be taken to the course select screen.  Once you've selected it, you'll be taken to a screen where you can invite players to your game.  Only those on your friend's list can be invited (at least for now).  You send an invitation for them to join, and if they opt to do so, a "Tee Off" option will illuminate.  Hit it and you're good to go.

One thing I would advise you to do before you hit your first shot is to make sure both or all players have selected the same degree of animations in the "Social" settings.  I've found that "none" works best, if you're interested in have the match run to completion, without dropping players.  You still get to see some degree of animation with the none setting.  I have only tried quick animations for this once, and it worked there as well.  I just don't have as large a sample size for "quick" to see how reliable it actually is.  "None" also trims the gap between your opponents actions and what you see down to about a second, whereas there's a 5 to 6 second cap with "Quick".  I know I don't want my opponent's verbal reaction to tip off what's happening with their shot, 5 seconds before I see it play out on the screen.  However, if you're not in voice chat with your opponent(s), there's nothing to go on as to when they've actually hit their shot so "Quick" of "Full" animations wouldn't be a problem in this regard.
