I thought I would try and make an effort to give my quick take on each course I played. Sorry if you are not happy with my opinion but that's all it is mate my opinion. I really liked the holes, I didn't see a path on the 1st I apologise if there was but still it was a hell of a walk. The planting around the green was really good but you don't have that kind of woodchip/pine surface near a green, when a shot is hit out of it, it will send debris all over the green, simple. I still think a big 20mph wind will make 2 unmakable but I may be wrong. The only reason I noticed it is because I did a hole on my last course that wasn't reachable in 2 with a big headwind, I've learned the hard way lol. Please don't be offended it's my critique your course was excellent when I build a course I don want good feedback I want problems so I can get better by taking it on board and making less mistakes.

Taste I didn't realise u had built wolfthorn goes without saying why it's so good can't wait until the full course.

TGC @ Hicksville: a few issues that arnt really relevant as not real life but I always take that into account. The start of the fairways are maybe a little too far away 2 may even be unreachable with a big headwind. The holes with water while good holes didn't have any way of crossing, I think although meaningless it's nice to take things like that into account. The planting around the 1st green was really nice but u wouldn't have that surface so close to the green. Again meaningless but course designer have to take these things on board. Lots of potential here.

Thanks for the criticism but on my three showcase holes there was always a path to the next fairway. Of course, it may be a long path that goes around a water body, but it is a path nonetheless. I want to make my course look nice in dull areas and because it isn't 'realistic' you don't like it? I plan on doing it more, maybe not as close to the main surfaces, but there are a lot of real courses that have a very very long rough along with the traditional heavy rough and 1st cut. My bad for trying to replicate that. As for the possibly unreachable fairways, I have played that hole with a headwind and reached with ease. You can normally hit a 3 wood into the shorter right side without any wind which means a driver with a headwind will do the same.
Thanks for the insight though Mav, I tend to reply to everyone that challenges the thought process to my designing.
I wouldn't take any criticism to heart or even apologise for how you have designed a course (that isn't what a reviewer is after).  We all have things we like to see and don't like to see and given only a handful of people you'll find contradictions in what makes a good course. I believe Mav quite enjoyed it and was looking for a few points that came to mind, he probably didn't pan the camera around to see if there was a long walk to get there... or maybe that just looked too long to him... It's such a subjective thing.

When doing something subjective like rating a course we all make snap judgements on one thing or another and I personally want to hear if someone says 'oh yeah true you can play it like that... But if you hadn't told me I'd have thought it was a design flaw'. Maybe next time there is something that can be done to hold the players hand a little in some way to guide them without need for an actual guide.  I'm talking proper generic here, but you can't help marking a negative against a course even if there is nothing wrong with what the designer has done... It's just human nature.

For what it's worth you'll get a decent review from me, I really enjoyed the course... Doesn't mean I won't have a few pointers although nothing comes to mind right now, I'll do a more detailed second play through

It's all good man. You have the right to bring that up. I was just giving you my counter points. I will definitely be more aware of stuff like that when I make my second course (I am in the pre-drawing stage currently, planning to do a double island type of deal). So I will look to correct some things I feel need correcting, the walking paths and the start of the fairway may or may not be one of them.

Yes! I would defend my course if I felt the critique was unjust or they had not understood what I was trying to achieve  too

Yes, definitely. I really didn't want my comments to come across as 'just take all criticism on the chin... Don't defend your course'.  Was very glad to see you both talking it over in a friendly way, so often on the forums and the Internet's in general its easy to light the touch paper.  Above all I really want these tours to be somewhere people can be open and honest with each other.

Anyways, love the courses on this weeks tour. I have voted for my favourite but I'll be playing through them again and there is every chance I'll change my mind, it was very close between several.  Past experience (having now played 46 of these showcase courses) says that we'll continue getting great submissions :)

And possibly another from me after I am done planning and then of course designing.

heres a course guide for my course maple valley:

Hole 2:

This one of my favorite holes as there are multiple options off the tee. A slightly downhill long par 4 measuring at over 480 yards. There are two fairways with water boarding both of them. If the wind is helping, try to drive the second fairway over water and have a much shorter , if the wind is against, layup.

Hole 3:

A very nice medium length par 3. A two tiered green, but a fairly easy one. Very nice views on this cross pond par 3. SHould be an easy birdie hole if it is not the sunday version.

Hole 6:

The one and only drivable hole! A beautiful par 4! Your tee shot is another risk reward shot. You can choose between the highly countered fairway or trying to drive the green. I suggest to go for it when the wind is up and layup when the wind is against. A nice hole with a cool bridge crossing over the inlet of water. A personal favorite.

Played nine holes of The Rolls of Kohala today.

Video is available here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFrEba-CqRU

I will try to include the designers ghost ball when i can for these videos.  It is always cool to see how the designer plays his own course.
