Could you kindly explain your #2 answer a bit more?
Assuming you are both on the same platform and on each other's friends lists, this is how it works:
You can enable the "Turn Based" option or not.
If enabled, you watch as the other person plays, and vice versa. Just like real golf. You watch their avatar hit shots and they see yours. The only downside is that the rounds tend to take much, much more time.
If not enabled, you both play simultaneously, and you see each other's ghost ball. The downside here is that if you both don't play at the same pace, one player can get a hole or several holes ahead of the other.
As far as game modes go, there have been some issues with match play, so for the group I play with (on PS4), we usually just set to stroke play and manually keep the match play score. Especially if it's a four ball match.
Either way, using your platform's voice chat is the way to go. There isn't a proper lobby, but if you have a few guys you can play with online, it is a more than enjoyable experience.
