There is a window that opens before launching the game. It allows you to set the visual quality of the game, select window mode and set your window's resolution. You need to select play from there before the game will launch in the headset. Please let us know if this solves your issue.

yes, it solves the issue.  I go into desktop mode from within the HMD, validate the settings in the desktop window, and most of the time (not all) it launches in VR.

I would say that it would be better if it could just launch normally from steam vr  / HMD without having to go back and forth to desktop mode.  thanks for your response.
