I can't seem to hit the ball straight even half of the time since the slightest cut can send the ball across the damn Atlantic. My sticks also seem to be extremely sensitive and, despite using Standard clubs, I've never finished a game with better than +15.

I'm new to the game, only bought it yesterday and didn't play its predecessor, so any tips about the game would be very helpful, thank you.

Visualize controlling your golfer in the same swing as an Ernie Els or Freddie Couples.

Smooth and rhythmic.

Do NOT accelerate through the downswing to impact as that will have a huge impact on tempo and shot results.

Hope this helps........

I agree about not rushing the downstroke, but sometimes even when the screen shows perfect for both strokes the ball veers way further left or right than I think my thumb motion justifies.  What I've found helps best is to go to the practice range and spend time orienting the controller in my hand so my thumb-stroke is perfectly straight relative to the controller.  For my hands that means holding the controller slightly angled down to the right side.  When I hold the controller perfectly straight my thumb motion isn't in perfect alignment with the controller.

I wish they had difficulty levels which affected such things -- I'm a casual golfer and don't want to enter tournaments and would much rather have my shots go closer to straight with little effort on my part.  I think they could create difficulty levels such as "Duffer" "Weekender" "Daily" "Good Amateur" "Pro" each of which would change the amount that joystick precision would affect each shot.  And if they wanted to make it so that the "Duffer" level (the one with the most straight shots regardless of joystick motion) players couldn't enter tournaments that would be fine with me.  They could add level restriction possibilities to events or even to clubhouses so that people with similar ability levels could compete with each other but couldn't compete against higher levels.  But people who chose the "Pro" level could compete in any tournament they wanted to, even the easy ones.

It's all about tempo

I love the fact that it is hard and challenging

I have found with my swing slow/perfect gives me pretty straight most of the time & goes about the distance i would expect...my only gripe is range/practice bears no resemblance to actually playing a course...i took 5 practice swings earlier & hit slow/perfect every time...come out of practice swing & hit very slow/fast doing the same thing.result...well i wont type it because it would be loads of ******  i have done the range stuff same thing...i want to like this game but what is the point of practice if it is pointless.

I have been using tour clubs and was having a really hard time hitting straight. I had the tempo down but it seemed no matter what I did I was veering slightly left or right when it comes to stick motion. Would take 10 practice shots and get inside red arc maybe 1 out of 10 tries. My controller was older and the right stick didn't feel to be moving smoothly. My left stick would also drift on its own.  I went out and bought an Xbox1 elite controller and it's made a huge difference. You can customize stick sensitivity which has really helped for the smoothness and direction of my swing. Majority are now within red arc. Changing the sensitivity has altered the tempo though. What used to be a perfect downswing is now slow, still getting used to that. Not saying going out and buying a 150 dollar controller is the only answer but it's helped in my case. Biggest thing is hitting the driving range until you consistently have good tempo and stick movement. Stick movement that gives you the white line on how you hit is not only the forward movement from what I've noticed. For example, If you bring your stick back for your backswing at a down to the right or down to the left motion and have a perfectly straight upward motion downswing your shot will not be straight and you'll be outside the red arc margins. Focus on straight stick movement backwards and forwards. Hope some of this info is helpful. The swing mechanics can be frustrating but really make the game about feel on how precise they are. I can usually feel and tell that I've pulled a shot left/right or that my tempo was off even before swing indicator shows up. I think that's pretty cool.

Can a drive veer one way or another if your tempo is off, even if you've pulled the stick down and back up straight?

Yes. Downswing affects it the most. Fast downswing will cause the ball to veer left (hook) and a slow downswing will cause it to veer right (slice). Downswing tempo is most important. Backswing tempo affects distance. Imagine backswing as the % of power your getting. If your backswing is perfect your getting close to 100% of your clubs distance. Fast backswing your not getting all of it and going to come up short. This is required for approach shots where you don't want a full swing that would send you past the hole, example being 12y chip shot distance and your only 8y from the pin. Slow backswing doesn't seem to change much of anything with a perfect downswing, maybe 1 or 2 yards less than normal carry distance on a drive. Here's a breakdown on what I've noticed so far.

Backswing | Downswing
Perfect - Perfect = Normal distance in direction of white line
Perfect - Slow = Normal distance veering right of white line
Perfect - Fast = Normal distance veering left of white line
Slow - Perfect = Slightly less than normal distance in direction of white line
Fast - Perfect = Less to a lot less than normal distance depending on where in backswing height you started downswing.

Combinations as far as slow - fast, fast - slow, or very fast/very slow I'm not 100% sure on, they'll go very badly I know that much  :-\.

Imagine the white line as a line drawn from your stick in the back position all the way to the forward position of your swing.

Hi there, I'm wondering, which stick sensitivity setting are you getting the best straight swing results with on the Elite Controller?

I'm using right stick delay maxed out. Seems to help me with the white line being straighter. It'll make downswing slower though. What you were doing to get perfect before will now probably register as slow.

What setting in the Xbox One settings is right stick "delay maxed out" ?  According to this link, the choices are:    Default, Delay, Aggressive, Instant, or Smooth.  I don't see a choice for "delay maxed out".    So I'm not sure if you're setting it on "Delay" or "Smooth" or what you're doing.

Ahhh ok thanks for clarifying.  I hadn't been into that menu before, so didn't realize there was a slider for customizing the "delay" choice.   Thanks again.

What about the setting in the Delay secrion, called "Use radial calculation"?
