I've noticed a couple of my holes where a ball rolls just barely off the green into the rough, and the default shot choice is "pitch" even though I'm less than 10 yards from the pin. If players aren't careful, this results in flying the green and even hitting in the water. Is there some kind of design tip to make suer the shot defaults to "chip", or is this a larger issue?

As a player only, I don't know for sure but I think the caddie's club choice is tied to way points. I notice that when I drive the green on a par 4 or get on in 2 on a par 5 this usually happens and yes it goes over and in the water.

Maybe you can check the closest way point and see if its piching or chipping distance away? or maybe it some glitch in pin placement or from moving pin ?

It is a bug.

Always check your shot type before hitting your shot.

lol !     ... I had a monster 620 par 5 today   ... and of the tee ,it gave me SW pitch shot  !
