Somewhere along the line this summer, I felt that HB said that we would be able to set a default wind and wind direction in the designer.  However, if it's in there, I'm sure not seeing it.

HB?  If it's really not in there, will we get it?  Now that players can choose their own playing conditions, why can't designers choose the default that they'd like for their own designs?

we never made any claim that the default wind direction would be in the game.  I think you may be getting it mixed up with the ability to set conditions when playing a course.

we never made any claim that the default wind direction would be in the game.  I think you may be getting it mixed up with the ability to set conditions when playing a course.

Once it became known that players would be able to choose their preferred playing conditions, some rather heated discussion arose (in several different threads) about designers losing some key aspects of how their designs play out.  Now, I will agree that there was never any promise from anyone at HB that a prevailing wind and wind direction would be a setting.  However, at some point, I got the impression that it would be included (of course those discussions are now gone with the forum reset, so I can't point to a particular thread).  Perhaps it was just wishful thinking on my part.  However, I would like to revive that debate.

With some course designs, a prevailing wind would be an important factor when laying out a hole and course.  If the designer has a moderate wind in mind for a hole, whether it be fore, aft, or cross, it would be a key factor in where to place bunkers, trees, and pins.  I can't think of too many rounds I've played in RL on a course next to the ocean that didn't have winds that had a considerable impact on play.

This "prevailing" wind would not have to be a constant for every round.  Winds and wind direction should be a variable, but it should be a variable that is based on the designer's default values.

I hope you will consider adding this to the designer at some point . . . preferably sooner than later.   :)

Its something that we've always wanted to implement in the course creator as it would add a great level of realism to courses and makes sense, its never been something that I've been asked to do directly.  If anyone form here gave that impression then they shouldn't have.

I'm hoping one day we'll get to add it in but its always been on the list of "wouldn't it be nice if..." and gets bumped for more important tasks.

Okay, Paul, thanks for the quick replies.  I appreciate that it's on "the list".   ;)

I remember RockManDan saying that it was absolutely necessary, but I don't recall anyone from HB saying that it would be in the game.  It isn't "absolutely necessary" either, although it would a nice feature to have.

I just posted a thread about this topic before seeing this post.  You cannot playtest hole by hole in the designer per se but you can select "unpublished courses" from the course selection screen in the main play menu.  I played my unpublished tournament course in full winds of the direction of my choosing just a short while ago.   8)
