Have not played online multiplayer in a long time, but last time I played the meter was at the bottom of the screen driving me nuts since I play without it against friends and ghosts solo.  Is there a way to turn it off or hide it while also playing online multiplayer where HB has it set on ? Thanks.

Yep. If you go into display/HUD settings and turn off your pre-shot feedback, that will hide the distance meter no matter what options are selected in societies or online.
