I prefer 3 click.  I have found analog swings to be either too easy or too hard.  Also alot of it depends on your controller.  With some controllers you can disable certain axis(s) and hit it straight everytime.  I think that you can also do that with certain mouse software.  The PS3 default controllers are extremely sensitive for me and could never hit it straight.  I bought a cheap afterglow PS3 controller and could hit it straight everytime on any difficulty in TW.  I dabbled in power stroke in links and was never great at it, but it was nice to do once in a while for a change.  If I was playing a LS tour match and I knew someone was power stroking I would as well just to make it more fair.  I think I prefered the links 3 click meters over the games that use the horizontal swing bar.  I am willing to try whatever though.  My main questions or concern is "Can you improve or master the swing mechanic with practice or is it dumb luck whether it goes straight or not?"  I dont mind a little randomness in shots I just dont want a game that depends on it to be difficult.

I don't mind 3 click but it just seems very outdated to me. When it comes to chipping, putting and other touchy shots i think the analog is the best option and more skillful/difficult. Don't forget that this is going to be a realistic golf sim so difficulty matters because golf certainly aint easy.

Somesome, the 80's called... they wanted their swing meter back, so it won't be in The Golf Club  8) ;D

Seriously though, one of HB Studios core design principles was no swing gauges or meters.  So you won't be seeing ANY sort of swing meter or bar.  As a HUD minimalist, I strongly support their decision!

Hey JCauthern,

That's 80's line is so funny. I thought I read they will be adding the ability to have aids to help the player with a on and off setting in the settings menu. I could be wrong this might just be for the trajectory of the ball and green grid. If you have any info on this please let me know.

Cheers!!!

I owe the line to the Radio Shack commercial from the Super Bowl :)  I've read that there will be trajectory aids along with grid lines (I'm assuming both will be optional), for which I can understand the need.  What they have made clear is that there won't be any "live" gauges or meters to aid in determining the swing's power or path.  They want it to be about feel, which makes a lot of sense to me.

Hey JCauthern,

That's right their was that funny Radio Shack commercial during the Super Bowl.

I hope they having some type of training for newbies to learn the mechanics of the swing style they are putting into the game. I know they are looking at putting in a driving range and perhaps a putting and chipping area.

Cheers!!!

How is using an analog controller more "realistic" in a video golf game?    Its no more realistic than using a mouse to click...  bottom line is there should be options, just like Links, for preferred method of swing.   Forcing everyone to adhere to one method of swing is silly.

I do understand where people looking at a 3 click swing are coming from, however I keep thinking back to Links for the original Xbox and remember how it did feel like the most natural gaming swing in relation to the real game I had experienced.

Personally I hope HB holds to their swing philosophy, as until anyone plays the game none of us know how well it truly does control. From the standpoint of everyone playing on an even playing field it also makes sense, as I suspect it would be very difficult to have two different swing modes and balance each method to perform with exactly equal parity.

Constantly in all forms of PC/Video gaming there are cries for innovation, for studios to move forward, yet the moment they try, so many people fall back to the old and tested methods because it is what they are used to.

Worse case scenario, as HB intends to support this game into the future, this could be added at a later stage if it turns out that after playing the game many would prefer an alternate swing method.

I really do hope I make it into the Beta so I can try the controller swing method, The 3 click meter being the only method I've ever used. I'd borrow a controller from my nephew and if I didn't make the beta and the 3 click meter wasn't part of the game when it's released I wouldn't buy the game not having tested the controller

Valid point RobV makes. Using your thumb to control an analogue controller back and forth may be more 'swing like' comapred to 2/3 clicking a mouse, but it sure doesn't make it more realistic. When was the last time you saw someone playing golf with just hid thumb, lol?

All the poo-pooing of the 2/3 clicking gives HB Studios the ideal opportunity to deliver what they seem to be aiming at - a golf game for the here and now, for the next generation.

Then based on that remit, create a mouse click swing that uses the movements of the animation to make the swing and hit the ball.

2 Click = Click and hold left mouse button and backswing starts. Let go to set the power. Downswing then commences and a second click delivers the strike. For a right hander, a bit too early and its a draw/pull/hook and bit too late its a fade.cut/slice.

3 Click = Click left mouse button to start the swing. Click again to set the power. Downswing is the same as 2 Click method.

The above doesn't require a swingmeter. Clickers gauge their swing by watching the animation.

For years I was a PC player and used 3 click. I played most golf games dating back to microsoft golf 3.0(I think that was what it was called). During those years I felt that 3 click was the only way to play golf sims.

Two years ago I switched to ps3 and have started using the controller for swings. Sometimes you can't teach an old dog new tricks but now I fully subscribe to this method. It feels much more natural to me trying to control back swing, speed and tempo to hit the ball. I golf IRL 4/5 times a week and this is as close as I can come to that feeling I get on the golf course.

I know that some will not agree so I hope that HB can incorporate all swings, make it a fair so there is no advantage from one type of swing or the other so that we can all enjoy this new sim.

I have high expectations for this sim. I think HB is going in a fresh new direction which is very refreshing for me.
