I'm sure the answer is straight forward, but why can you play Perfect Golf through Steam on a Mac, but you can't do the same with TGC?

I thought they were built with the same underlying technology?

Thanks in advance.

This response is in no way, shape, or form technically informed

Cuz Macs are the work of the Devil?

I would say, because one company wrote a Mac version and one did not.  And, of course, Satan's influence as well. :)

This is the closest answer, minus the Satan stuff :)

It is sort of like asking, 'why can one game run on the PS4 and Xbox one, and the other can not (even though they use the same underlying technology)?'

Perfect Golf is made using Unity engine.  The unity engine easily ports to mac automatically.  I have no clue what the superior The Golf Club engine is however I do not think it is unity and therefore does not easily port to mac.  It would require a bit of work for that and to be honest seems pointless.

Interesting tidbit, the Unity engine was originally only made for the mac.

I could be completely wrong though so take what I say with a grain of salt... or a shaker.

Edit:

BTW I am wrong, The Golf Club also uses the Unity engine.  Maybe it has something to do with the consoles but I now I do not know why it is not mac compatible.

I also was confused as both do use Unity as you mentioned.

I think some of us are curious as to what that really means and why was it an easier thing (seemingly) for Perfect Parallel to do (Mac version)?

All I know is that at least those on Macs can currently play TGC (via Bootcamp or Parallels) whereas those on consoles can't currently play PG.  ;) :(

I'm totally THRILLED that PG isn't on consoles.

Consoles are a nightmare of rules, restrictions, extra $ for full multiplayer, update delays and being tied to specific (and often outdated) hardware for a long time.

(also, check out how much the XB1 users here on the forums are enjoying TGC on their console. Not great)

Yeah..I can't speak to what engine they used...that is a question probably better asked of them.  As for being an "easier thing", I think that is an assumption that is improperly applied.  I would guess, as I have no idea how easy or hard for them that process was, that it is more about where our respective teams chose to put our energy.  As MERACE pointed out, TGC is playable on Xbox One and PS4, as well as PC.  Those platforms are simply where we have put our focus so far. We are interested in possibly doing a MAC version, but for now there are other things we are focusing on in the current versions of the game.

HB kinda already answered this. They didn't write a mac version. Why? *shrug* But the answer to the primary question is "they didn't make one". Just a choice it seems.

Well the 'why' is, of course...resources.  Making a Mac version of our game is not as easy as a checkbox and a couple of tweaks to UI.  It requires work and we have to make choices of where to put our money and manpower (and womanpower).

I only posted because this somehow got brought back from the dead and started to go sideways...  8)
