Is there going to be a way to play against strangers online since there isn't going to be a lobby?

Most likely the answer is no,  but this should be their main focus along with some game modes....   It's totally ludicrous that the game handcuffs us to a friends list that half the time is inactive at the times you want to play live...  Love the game but loathe where we're at with this at the moment...

I agree it's kind of pointless to add more modes without some way of connecting to those not on your friends list.

Disappointing. They still don't get true H2H turn based play and how important lobbies are.

Is it a new trend? Rory PGA does not have it, SW BF does not have it either. BF4 has it though. I cant stand COD but do they have lobbies? I mean that game sells like crazy so maybe they are copying them?

IF anyone ever played Socom on PS2 it had one of the best online lobby system I have ever seen. Plus it had full clan support, you could vote people out of the room and  a lot of other features that where way beyond its time. The other cool thing was your rank moved up and down on how good you played. So if had your "wings" you were a pretty good player.

Can you say what the other mode is Keith?  I'm guessing it's not scramble...that one is badly needed for the simulator user base at some point.

The other mode is going to be Four Ball.  You play with four people set up as two teams, and the teammate with the lowest score on the hole wins the hole for that team.

Fourball - very nice!

How difficult will it be to get a working Alt shot?

Nice to see as well that focus has gone into valuable core improvements to the game rather than a lobby system for now.

Adding Alt shot will mean we can have true Ryder Cup formatted events.  Alt shot is an awesome team event and requires a lot of strategy.

Stopped by to see where we're at on this, i see johneric8 is still around wanting the same thing i do, some good multiplayer and some new multiplayer modes. Alt shot, best ball, and match are a must and it's still not here. I used to love to play best ball on LinksLS. Two teams against each other, you all hit then each team picks which ball to play from. Makes for some fun shots if the first guy on your team goes and gets a good shot, the second person can "go for it" and sometimes land some amazing shots that you would never try if it was a normal game.

Did I read right that they are killing the lobby idea all together? It would be nice to be able to pick up a 3rd or 4th guy to play if you do not have enough friends online at a given time. Is a lobby really that big of a deal to design? Somehow a game like rocket league can have cross platform play with ps4 and pc without a hitch in a simple matchmaking system....

What up Swami...  Yeah,  I'm still beating the drum for a good multiplayer but this game has really taken the course creator updates to a whole other level.   If you check the new threads and such the only thing you see typically is post about new courses and design techniques.    The funny thing is,   you got guys that are visibly upset that their courses get no plays or love and they have the audacity to wonder why.   Without a good social environment that REALLY encourages people to stay active and play each other without having to jump through hoops would keep these new courses more in the public eye.    The other latest trend is these knockout tourneys which have seemingly gotten all of the attention on HB's DEV diaries the past few months.

Having said all of that,  I'm still giving HB the benefit of the doubt I think somehow they plan to update game modes and multiplayer pretty soon,  but from what I hear it's not even going to come close to giving us what we need but at least it's something.

I agree with you though,   some great game modes will be awesome,   but unfortunately if something isn't done about how we hook up I have a feeling it's going to be for naught.

That's a good start.  Thanks for letting us know Keith.  I'll be hoping scramble might be planned for the March update.  :)

These modes will be good for tourny set-ups, mostly.  Anyone looking to hop on at anytime, plug in certain criteria and hit search, join a round in progress, with non friends, not so much.  If you want to play live in these modes, it's still going to require us to set up times and dates with friends to do so, or play their ghost balls.  It's the same thing we have now, just with additional modes to choose from.   Different modes does not equal a LIVE, anyone, anytime, any place, mutiplayer experience.

Call it what you want, but until HB puts in a lobby system that allows us to pick, play and choose, when, where, and who we want to play with, at anytime, LIVE friends or not, it's still going require us to set up a live mutiplayer experience, (friends only), on our own.

Good concise comments.   HB can call the multiplayer system anything they like because I know the word "lobby" is a dirty word to them,  but they must understand the importance of being able to set up matches and then find easy ways to hook up with live players without having to coordinate with a friend for crying out loud.   The way they have it now is better than nothing at all,   but it really takes away from how great this game could really be.    The whole friends based matches is really silly just from the standpoint that on consoles hooking up is all done outside the game through the message centers just how it is on Steam through the PC.     I don't want to speak for everyone whom is into multiplayer,   but it seems so counter intuitive to have to hit the message center and ask a gamer if they want a round of TGC.   Heck,  half the time when I ask someone they say things like   "I'm watching Netflix"   Or   "I'm already in a round maybe tonight"...    Like I've said a million times the way HB is going about this whole multiplayer system has been incredibly frustrating for me,   and it's mind boggling how they wouldn't want a real lobby system in the game to put the icing on the cake.

Thanks, and agree.

Most people just don't want to intrude on other people, or be intrude upon.  They just rather search, join a round with whomever, and play.  Sort of like texting someone, instead of calling them.  Heck, you might end up making a new friend to put on your friends list.  Not so bad.......right?

If they despise using the word "Lobby", then call it something else, like "The HBS Mutiplayer Clubhouse", where you can roam around, pick your poison, hit search, then join.  Even send out invites to your friends to meet you at the Clubhouse for a live round/mode of play.  Instead of trying to coordinate meeting at the first tee (which is often times cumbersome and time consuming), gather at the clubhouse until all invites are ready or "Open" 2-4 player Golf Cart, or "Private" 2-4 player Golf Cart are full. "Golf Cart Full" showing icons of golf carts full, partially full, or empty,  then hit " start round, or tour".   All kinds of possibilities!!

Keith- Are they only going to offer the two modes (Four Ball, Match Play)?  No Alternate shot?

I don't bother people on my friends list unless I have known them for a long time. It is so much easier to just play with a random sometimes. The main reason is you both are ready and willing to play a round a golf. That is why you are in the lobby or in the matchmaking system.

Yes,   and I'm quite sure that Keith and HBS and or Anthony is reading this post and agrees with us 100% even if they don't say so.    They know that the friends only multiplayer is just a workaround and not all attractive.    Right now as I type this they're working on a fancy on boarding system to make it somewhat easier to hook up with FRIENDS on our list,   but the problem remains the same because would if we don't care about having loads of friends?     I know Keith has said that he doesn't want to play with a stranger,   but most modern games are setup to do just that,   play with strangers.    Why do games do that?   well,   because they want it to be convenient for the modern gamer looking for a live match.    The ghost balls are neat and I do use them,   but it wasn't very fun yesterday when I actually spanked HB Keith because he had serious winds in his face and I didn't...
